Cyber Monday – November 30th

November 30th, 2020 by tisner

Cyber Monday is the Internet’s answer to Black Friday deals. The official observance takes place the Monday after Thanksgiving.

While Internet-based companies traditionally offered their best holiday shopping on Cyber Monday to compete with Black Friday deals in brick and mortar stores, things have been changing. However, in more recent years, Black Friday and Cyber Monday deals tend to run together. Some start as early as the week of Thanksgiving and run right through the holiday season. But don’t neglect online deals. There may still be savings to be had.

In 2014, Monday after Thanksgiving online sales continued to trend upward with 15.4% increase in revenue from 2013 sales, making it the biggest, online shopping day in history. In 2014 Americans spent an average of $124 per order on Cyber Monday.

Social media also ramps up advertising opportunities, bringing potential shoppers to retailers’ online stores. Cyber shopping is expected to be up again this year with a predicted 3 billion in sales.

Purchases on mobile devices also have increased, adding to the convenience of Cyber shopping for the holidays. No longer do you have to be strapped to your PC or Mac in order to make an online purchase. Purchases can now be made on the train during a morning commute while waiting for a doctor’s appointment or during a lunch break.

Some of the most popular online purchases are likely to be tech items, especially wearable technology as well as traditional small appliances, clothing, gift cards, and digital media.

HOW TO OBSERVE #CyberMonday

When it comes to holiday shopping, we all want to get the best deals on the best gifts. While we’re on the internet, it’s important to be safe while we’re being savvy shoppers, too.

  • Make your list early and stick to it. This will also help you to stay on budget.
  • Stick to trusted websites and be wary of spam, scams, and spoofed sites.
  • Shop local websites. Many small businesses also participate in Cyber Monday. You may find a deal you didn’t expect.
  • Check your favorite retailer’s social media feeds for the best deals.
  • Maximize your savings by using the card with the best points.
  • When all the shopping is done, be sure to monitor your credit cards and bank accounts for suspicious activity. If you notice anything you don’t recognize, report it immediately.

Get your computer out and enjoy those online deals.

National Doughnut Day – November 5th

November 5th, 2020 by tisner

National Doughnut Day on November 5th is one of two observed by doughnut lovers across the nation. The first Friday in June is the other day doughnuts steal the bakery case spotlight ready to tease their way into white bakery box home!

For more information on the National Doughnut Day celebrated in June.

History disputes the origin of the doughnut. One theory suggests Dutch settlers brought doughnuts to North America much like they brought other traditional American desserts. They receive credit for such desserts as the apple pie, cream pie, and cobbler.

Doughnuts come in many shapes. Was the original doughnut round? If so, American, Hanson Gregory laid claim to inventing the ring-shaped doughnut in 1847. He was on-board a lime-trading ship. Only 16 at the time, Gregory claims he punched a hole in the center of dough with the ship’s tin pepper box. Later, he taught the technique to his mother.

Traveling further back in time, we look at an English cookbook. According to anthropologist Paul R. Mullins, an 1803 volume included doughnuts in the appendix of American recipes. However, the earliest recorded usage of the term doughnut is found in a short story in a Boston Times article about “fire-cakes and dough-nuts” published in 1808.

A more commonly cited first written recording of the word is Washington Irving’s reference to doughnuts in 1809 in his History of New York. He described balls of sweetened dough, fried in hog’s fat. The author called them doughnuts. Today, these nuts of fried dough are called doughnut holes.

Another author, William Cullen Bryant describes doughnuts fried in lard in his book Picturesque America; Or, the Land We Live In which was published in 1872.

Donut versus Doughnut
  • Print ads for cake and glazed donuts and doughnuts existed from at least 1896 in the United States.
  • George W. Peck published Peck’s Bad Boy and his Pa in 1900It contained the first known printed use of donut. In it, a character is quoted as saying, “Pa said he guessed he hadn’t got much appetite and he would just drink a cup of coffee and eat a donut.”
  • In 1919, the Square Donut Company of America was founded. Square donuts offer an easier to package product.

The more traditional spelling is doughnut. However, both doughnut and donut are pervasive in American English.

Doughnuts come in a large variety of recipes, flavors, and toppings. However, just like many pastries, we are only limited by imagination and ingredients at hand. From syrups and jellies to sprinkles and custards, top them, fill them, bake them or fry them. Doughnuts have a mouth-watering way of glazing and dusting their way into our shopping carts. They also slip into the break room at work to share.

National Cat Day – October 29th

October 29th, 2020 by tisner

National Cat Day on October 29th is the purrfect day to give extra attention to your feline friends.

Cats make excellent companions. They rarely miss you, but when they do, you sure know it. Awareness days such as this one urge pet lovers to adopt from a local shelter. The day also reminds us that neutering and spaying our furry companions helps reduce the abandoned population.

Shelters are full of cats and kittens in need of forever homes. These feline fur babies come with as many personalities as they do colors and coats. They curl into our hearts and will just as quickly remind us they decide who they love. Whether they were born in the shelter, surrendered or abandoned, 3.4 million find their way to a shelter.

When considering the adoption of a furbaby, take your time. Each shelter animal will touch your heart, so be sure to find a life-long love.

  • Consider your lifestyle. Will you have time for an active kitten or will an adult cat be more to your pace?
  • Make multiple visits before making a choice. Sometimes, the purrfect cat will choose you.
  • Spend one-on-one time with the cat so you have some bonding meowments and her true personality comes through.
  • Do other members of your fur family need to be considered? If so, be sure to introduce them to be sure their personalities mesh.
  • When you bring your new family member home, have a space ready for him to decompress and adjust to his new abode. Don’t be surprised if he hides at first. This is normal cat behavior.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalCatDay

Pay particular attention to your cat today.  Adopt a new cat. Use #NationalCatDay to post on social media.

NATIONAL CAT DAY HISTORY

This day was created by Pet Lifestyle Expert and Animal Welfare Advocate, Colleen Paige, in 2005.   Since its inception, it has helped save the lives of more than one million cats.

National Boston Cream Pie Day – October 23rd

October 23rd, 2020 by tisner

National Boston Cream Pie Day serves up a delicious dessert on October 23rd each year. Pie lovers, move along. Cake lovers, pull up a chair. Let’s celebrate the cake with an identity crisis! Boston Cream Pie is a chocolate frosted, custard-filled cake that is loved by millions.

In 1856, at Boston’s Parker House Hotel, French chef Monsieur Augustine Francois Anezin created this pudding and cake combination.

The decadent cake comprises two layers of sponge cake filled with vanilla-flavored custard or creme patisserie. The cake is then topped with a chocolate glaze, such as a ganache or sometimes powdered sugar and a cherry.

In 1996, Massachusetts declared the Boston Cream Pie as their official dessert.

HOW TO OBSERVE #BostonCreamPieDay

Celebrate the dessert with a slice of homemade Boston Creme Pie made from one of the following recipes. Be sure to invite someone to share it with you and make it a real celebration. Don’t want to bake? Visit your favorite bakery and give them a shout out while you’re there. Take a selfie and share it on social media.

National Moldy Cheese Day – October 9th

October 9th, 2020 by tisner

National Moldy Cheese Day is a unique holiday that is observed each year on October 9th.

A cheesemonger is a person who specializes in cheeses, butter, and other dairy products. They may take umbrage at the ordinary person’s offense of moldy cheese. Well, depending on the type of mold, of course. Some cheese molds, red or brown-tinged molds, for example, are offensive. Toss those bacteria-contaminated moldy cheeses in the garbage quickly and move along to the grey, blue, or green colored moldy cheeses in the fridge instead.

Like a sommelier pairs the best wines with meals, a cheesemonger provides expert advice on artisan cheeses for recipes, banquets, and sources for restaurants.

Cheeses such as Maytag blue, Roquefort, Brie, bleu, camembert, gorgonzola, and Stilton are a few of the moldy reasons cheese lovers celebrate on this day.

Moldy cheese gets such colorful phrases. For example, the fuzzy mold on a wheel of fresh brie is called cats fur. These bloomy rind cheeses take some careful maintenance. However, the results are satisfying. Isn’t the best food is a bit of a science experiment, anyway?

Gorgonzola cheese is made with three different kinds of mold spores. It’s like a milder blue cheese, but gorgonzola is creamier and earthier. Toss it with pasta and mushrooms for an outstanding meal. Also, it compliments any cheese plate. Add apples and tart, dried cranberries.

HOW TO OBSERVE #MoldyCheeseDay

Stop by a local deli or chat with your favorite cheesemonger about a uniquely moldy cheese. Invite friends for a tasting and use #MoldyCheeseDay to post on social media.

National Daughters Day – September 25th

September 25th, 2020 by tisner

When it comes to offspring, National Daughter’s Day reminds of the young women and girls in our lives. On September 25th, spend time with your daughter.

Daughters bring a certain kind of joy into our world. Like all children, they have their own personalities and strengths. As parents, we look forward to discovering the world through their eyes.

Depending on where you live, International Daughter’s Day is observed on the Fourth Sunday in September. Elsewhere the day might be observed on October 1st. No matter when you celebrate, the day provides an opportunity to show your daughter genuine support, encouragement, and love.

In some countries, daughters face a rough start in the world. They are sometimes denied an education, equal employment or even healthcare. Sons are put before them and given priority. Social stereotypes set certain expectations of behavior for daughters including how they dress and behave.

The day offers us an opportunity to be thankful for our daughters and to find ways to ensure daughters around the world have every opportunity to succeed.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDaughtersDay

Share the day with your daughter. Look back on memories or create new ones. Some other ways to celebrate the day include:

  • Send your daughter a card.
  • Take a selfie every year on National Daughter’s Day. Over the years, you will be able to see how much she and you have changed.
  • Donate to an organization that supports educating daughters. For example, Women One provides support to women and girls worldwide. Another is Helping Women Period which supplies feminine products worldwide.
  • Teach your daughter something new. Whether it’s useful or fun, practical or vital, your daughter will appreciate you for it.
  • Learn something from your daughter. Our daughters’ growing catalog of experiences offers us a treasure trove of information that they will gladly share with us.

While you’re celebrating daughters and YOUR daughter, be sure to share your day with us, too. Use #NationalDaughtersDay to post on social media all the ways you celebrate.
